Claire Bateman brings decades of experience as a writer, editor, and educator to her role as Essay Director at College Match. She works closely with students applying to undergraduate programs, summer intensives, internships, and graduate schools—including medical school—guiding them through every stage of the writing process. From uncovering compelling themes to mastering supplemental essays, Claire helps students find their authentic voice and tell their stories with confidence and clarity.

With deep expertise in conceptual development, content shaping, and line editing, Claire coaches students not just in what to say—but in how to say it in a way that resonates with admissions officers.


Acclaimed Writer & Educator

Claire is the author of eight collections of poetry, prose poetry, and flash fiction, including Scape (New Issues) and the forthcoming Wonders of the Invisible World (42 Miles Press). Her newly completed fiction collection, The Pillow Museum, reflects her signature blend of imagination and insight.

Her writing has earned prestigious honors such as:

  • Two Pushcart Prizes

  • National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Fellowship

  • Two-time winner of the New Millennium Poetry Award

Deep Roots in the Arts & Education

A proud alumna of Kenyon College and Vermont College (MFA in Poetry), Claire has taught at Clemson University, Chattanooga State, and numerous national literary festivals. She also led the Creative Writing Program at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC, mentoring some of the country’s most promising young writers.

She currently serves as:

  • Advisory Board Member for New Ohio Review and Orison Books
