Sarah, a talented violinist from San Francisco, came to College Match during her junior year with a big decision ahead: should she apply to a conservatory, a Bachelor of Music program, or pursue a broader liberal arts education with a strong music department? While she loved performing, she wasn’t ready to commit to the conservatory track, which often meant intense coursework in music theory, composition, and history—subjects that didn’t fuel her creativity the same way performing did.
Through guided essay development, College Match helped Sarah discover a compelling and authentic narrative that blended her love of music with a new academic interest—neuroscience. In her physiology class, Sarah had become fascinated by the brain’s response to music. We encouraged her to explore this intersection further, leading her to a unique summer internship testing neuroplasticity-enhancing headphones for musicians. She even created a performance video that gained thousands of views on YouTube and showcased the device’s real-world application.
We worked closely with Sarah to turn this experience into a standout personal statement—one that captured her intellectual curiosity, creativity, and depth. Her essay framed her violin not just as an instrument of music, but as a tool for scientific exploration and human connection.
Sarah applied broadly, submitting arts supplements and tailored supplemental essays to top programs at Rice, UCLA, USC, Northwestern, Indiana University, and Oberlin. Ultimately, her essay—and her ability to articulate a cohesive interdisciplinary vision—helped her stand out.
Today, Sarah is thriving at Stanford University, where she’s the concertmaster of the Stanford Symphony and earning a performance certificate while majoring in Human Biology with a focus on neuropsychological perspectives on art and culture.
ROBITICS FANTASY BECOMES REALITY

When Sharon first came to College Match as a sophomore from Belmont, MA, she had a general interest in computers and technology—but hadn’t yet found a way to express that passion in a meaningful or distinctive way. She was bright, hardworking, and well-liked among her peers, but her early college application drafts felt generic and lacked a clear throughline.
Through one-on-one strategy sessions and guided brainstorming, we helped Sharon uncover the deeper potential in her interests. With our support, she joined local tech clubs and science fairs, and—most impactfully—tried out for her school’s Robotics Team. When she was selected as team captain during her junior year, we helped her identify key moments of leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving that could anchor a compelling college essay.
As Sharon led her team to create an original robot prototype that went on to win major science competitions at the state, national, and international levels, she grew into her role as both a builder and a mentor. She later earned a national “Women in Sciences” award and was featured in a magazine spotlighting rising talent in STEM.
We worked closely with Sharon to craft an essay that didn’t just list her achievements—it told a story. Her final personal statement reflected her journey from quiet curiosity to confident leadership, showing admissions officers exactly how she took initiative and made an impact.
Sharon ultimately received offers from multiple top universities and accepted a prestigious scholarship to attend USC, where she now collaborates with peers on cutting-edge robotics research.
FAMILY PRIDE SAVES CHILDREN'S LIVES

Ali began working with College Match as a freshman in Santa Clara, CA. At the time, she hadn’t yet uncovered her unique strengths—but she had a strong connection to her Romanian roots. Through thoughtful coaching and reflective essay exercises, we helped Ali identify experiences that could shape a powerful college narrative.
Her breakthrough came during a summer volunteer trip to an orphanage in Bucharest. Deeply moved by the children she met, Ali returned home with a newfound sense of purpose. With our guidance, she channeled that experience into a bold initiative: co-founding a nonprofit to raise awareness and funds for Romani children in need.
We worked with Ali to translate this transformation into a deeply personal and impactful college essay. Her writing highlighted not just her compassion, but her growth into a leader—one who organized fundraisers, managed volunteers, and raised over $20,000 to improve living conditions abroad. Most importantly, her essay showed admissions officers how a global experience sparked a lasting mission.
Ali’s authenticity, sense of purpose, and clear voice helped her stand out in a competitive applicant pool. She ultimately chose Carleton College, where she’s pursuing pre-medical studies and continuing her work to improve the lives of vulnerable children in Romania and beyond.
TRANSFORMING DOODLES INTO HOMES

When Peter first connected with College Match the summer after his sophomore year in Berkeley, CA, he was feeling unmotivated in school and unsure of his path. His true passion—sketching and building models—seemed more like a hobby than a direction. But during our early brainstorming sessions, it became clear that Peter’s creativity could be channeled into something meaningful.
With our guidance, Peter explored the intersection of design and service. His family helped connect him to a nonprofit in Guatemala that builds homes for underserved communities. That summer, with support from College Match, Peter traveled to Guatemala on a work visa, immersing himself in the hands-on process of construction and community collaboration.
This experience became the foundation of his college essay. We helped Peter craft a narrative that highlighted not only his design skills, but also his transformation—from a student uncertain about the future to one who found meaning in creating structures that improve lives. His essay didn’t just describe a summer abroad—it showed how purpose and passion can align to drive academic ambition.
Throughout his junior year, Peter deepened his commitment to architecture, learning how to draft blueprints and preparing to return the next summer—this time with his own designs ready to be built. His final essay painted a compelling portrait of a student who had discovered direction, discipline, and a deep desire to serve through architecture.
Peter was accepted into Washington University’s renowned architecture program, where he continues to blend innovation with impact, working alongside top minds to address housing needs in communities around the world.
FROM SCARED TO PREPARED

When George came to College Match as a junior in Sacramento, CA, he felt unsure of how he could stand out to colleges. He didn’t care for competition, had no interest in traditional extracurriculars, and felt like his passion for hip-hop wasn’t something colleges would value. But from our first meeting, it was clear George had a unique voice—he just needed the confidence and support to use it.
During SAT prep sessions with friends, George noticed his peers struggling with pre-calculus concepts. Inspired by his love for music, and with encouragement from College Match, he wrote and recorded a hip-hop track explaining the fundamentals of calculus. What started as a creative experiment quickly turned into something bigger—his classmates loved it, teachers shared it, and George began building a following online. His math-themed rap videos are now used in classrooms across the country.
We worked with George to shape this journey into a standout college essay—one that highlighted his creativity, empathy, and originality. Instead of focusing on what he lacked, the essay centered on what he had to offer: a fresh way of engaging with education, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to making learning more accessible and fun.
George’s story of using music to educate and inspire resonated with admissions officers. He was accepted to UCLA, where he’s surrounded by a community of artists and innovators who, like him, believe that creativity is a form of leadership—and that music can be a powerful message.
